Business InformationReza Ghavamian, MD, director of urology for Northwell Health across eastern Long Island and chair of the department of urology at Huntington Hospital, joined Northwell in 2017. A urologic oncologist, he surgically treats cancers of the prostate, kidney, bladder, ureters and testes.
Dr. Ghavamian performs open surgery as well as minimally invasive approaches, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted procedures. An early adopter of robotic surgery, Dr. Ghavamian has performed more than 3,500 major robotic operations for urologic tumors. “I was recruited to Northwell and Suffolk County to establish a comprehensive urologic program and to offer my patients state-of-the-art care, close to home,” he says.
After earning his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Ghavamian completed a urologic surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and then a fellowship in urologic oncology at the Mayo Clinic. Before coming to Northwell, he spent nearly two decades at Montefiore Medical Center, where he last served as interim chair of the department of urology and professor of urology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Ghavamian works with a team of imaging specialists, pathologists, urologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists to diagnose and manage urologic cancers, including complex cases. Together, they offer patients advanced, personalized treatment plans. “Our team also focuses on survivorship and long-term follow up of our patients.”
A professor of urology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Dr. Ghavamian has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and editorials. He has also authored several book chapters in prestigious urologic textbooks including Campbell’s Urology. He has personally edited two textbooks on robotic urologic surgery. In addition, he is on the editorial board of Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations, Videourology and Journal of Urology Open Access. He presents nationally and internationally at various medical meetings, is a frequent invited speaker and is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology and the Endourologic Society.
Dr. Ghavamian has held important leadership positions in his specialty nationally. He is currently a member of the board of directors for the American Urological Association (AUA). He is a past president of the AUA’s New York Section. He has been a Castle Connolly Top Doctor of the New York Metro Area since 2009 and its digital guide for the last seven years, a New York Magazine Top Doctor for seven years and a Newsday Top Doctor on Long Island for the last five years.
The best part of his job is the bond he forms with patients and their families. He says, “I feel honored to get to be part of their lives after treatment for many years to come.”
