Dr. Mayes has been working in healthcare for over 13 years, which started in northwest Wyoming near the homestead of her maternal family. She began working with adolescents in a behavior modification program & volunteered with a local free clinic while pursuing her undergraduate degree. As an RN, she lived on an American Indian reservation for over a year helping to provide critical access care, including labor & delivery, outpatient surgery & infusion, & emergency intervention for medical & mental crises. Dr. Mayes discovered a deep love for emergency & mental health care, & decided to continue her education through VCU's PMHNP program & a DNP degree from Augusta University.
